My drive is a
Model: ST9500325AS (SATA)
Firmware: 0005HPM1
LBA: 976773168
In a HP laptop with VISTA installed

In SMART I see 197 Current Pending Errors Count  100 100 0000000000-000B 000 (aka 11 pending errors).  As I understand it these are areas on the drive that have had a problem in the past but may not in the future so it has not been reallocated yet.   Should I be concerned?  It was on 6 for quite a while then a few days it went up to 11.  I haven't had any errors or problems in booting or any dataloss.  There have not been any reallocated sectors.  This is the only area SMART is flagging.

Also I have ran the full surface scan and are the "bad blocks" these same areas?  Does the scan actually test areas said to be bad blocks or HDDScan just assume that they are and does not test?

Should I use chkdsk /b    NTFS only, since Vista. Clears the list of bad clusters on the volume and rescans all clusters for errors (implies /r) (as per wikipedia).  Or should I just let it sit and not be concerned?

Any thoughts/insight is greatly apprecated.

Pendings mean there are potential bad blocks on the surface and drive is going to decide what to with them but later
You can scan the whole surface and if everything is nice and clean then pendings should disappear

I would backup critical stuff before scanning

Hmm I have been doing backups (although I might do them a bit more often now) and did a scan with HDDscan (or did you mean with chkdsk?).  No change in pending or reallocation.  No loss of data either.

Ok.  This scan says 2 bad blocks but SMART says Current Pending Sector Count 11.  And thanks in advance for any insights.

So your drive has real bad blocks
I think this should be enough to RMA it

I was afraid of that thanks for the confirm.  Does HDDScan scan all blocks even if the drive has labeled them as bad (reallocated)?  Although I see the drive says reallocated sectors still 0.  Which seems odd.  So I assume that HDDScan checked those blocks in detail.

No, reallocated blocks cannot be tested with HDDScan
So those bad blocks are not reallocated

I thought as much.  Sadly the computer is out of warranty (only one year).  :/  Figures just by a few months too.
